This expert provides expert testimony in injury biomechanics for both plaintiff and defense cases associated with products liability, personal injury, premises liability, wrongful death and medical malpractice. He has qualified in court both as an engineering and a medical expert for cases involving motor vehicle accidents; slips, trips and falls; sports injuries, recreation and safety equipment; industrial injuries, ergonomics and repetitive stress syndromes; and medical malpractice.
He was director of the Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory at Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Maurice E. Mueller Professor of Biomechanics at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard/MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology (HST). He received a Ph.D. at Northwestern University and spent post-doctoral years in Davos, Switzerland and Stockholm, Sweden. He taught at Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania before joining the faculties at Harvard Medical School and MIT. He was named to the Maurice E. Mueller Professorship of Biomechanics.
He has received a number of awards, most recently, the Borelli Award from the American Society of Biomechanics and the Bristol-Myers Squibb/Zimmer Institutional Grant for Excellence in Research Orthopaedic Treatment. He is the author of 185 peer-reviewed publications, 63 chapters, and 3 books. He is perhaps best known for his work on the role of falling in the etiology of hip fracture, work that served to revise the notion that hip fractures result primarily from age-related bone loss, or osteoporosis.
He served Oregon State University (OSU) as Vice Provost for Research. He continues to hold faculty appointments in Exercise and Sport Science and Mechanical Engineering at OSU and Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU).
