The goal is to establish the proximate cause of clinical symptoms. "Did X injury cause the following symptoms?"
The independent medical examiner is a neutral third party and therefore able to objectively evaluate cause and effect between symptoms and etiology. This process usually involves a physical examination in addition to necessary diagnostic tests such as lab work, x-rays, MRI's, CAT scans if those available in the records are inadequate, inconclusive or incomplete.
