Title of thesis: "A study of some blood cellular elements and iso-immunisation in the pig".

Postgraduate Diploma: Fellowship of Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, 1985.

Title of thesis: "Studies on the pathogenesis of salmonellosis in sheep".

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

From 1 February 1999 to January 2002 Principal and Chief Executive of the Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) which has a budget of 48m and a staff of 1150 and majors in the three interconnected areas of Education, Research and Development and Consultancy.

From 1 October 1997 Vice Principal of SAC with responsibility for Corporate Operations, including Edinburgh Genetics, SAC International, Signet (Joint Venture with MLC), Dairy Research Consultancy (Joint Venture with Reading University), Capital Diagnostics and Marketing. Management link for Animal Biology and Veterinary Science Divisions. Chairman of SAC Health and Safety Committee. Responsible for SAC Farms (approximately 5000 ha with enterprises including dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry and arable farming). Executive Director on SAC Board.

From October 1986 Director of the Veterinary Services Division of SAC which includes 8 Centres located throughout Scotland. In addition there are veterinary specialists for dairy cattle, pigs, poultry, epidemiology and reproduction. Responsible for directing the educational, research and advisory functions of the Division. Member of the Executive Board of SAC and Chairman of the SAC Veterinary Services Management Group, Centre Managers Meetings and R&D Group. Member of the Board of Edinburgh Genetics and Chairman of the Sheep and Goat Health Schemes Board. Chairman of the SAC Health and Safety Committee.

From 1973 to 1986 Senior Veterinary Investigation Officer, East of Scotland College of Agriculture, St Boswells, Roxburghshire TD6 0EU.

From 1967 to 1973 Research Assistant and Lecturer, University of Edinburgh, Department of Animal Health.

From 1966 to 1967Assistant Veterinary Investigation Officer, North of Scotland College of Agriculture, Aberdeen.

From 1962 to 1966 Assistant in large animal veterinary practice with Messrs Sievwright and Watt in Tarland, Aberdeenshire.
