Short Biography:

EW #882  CBET, CCE has over 30 years experience in clinical engineering. With undergraduate training in life sciences, and graduate work in medical technology and clinical engineering, he has a unique combination of clinical and technical knowledge.

Prior to 1984, He was Director of Biomedical Engineering for St. Joseph Hospital and Children's Hospital. His background includes experience as a regional manager for the  Biomedical Engienering Services of the Hospital Council of Southern California; establishment of the biomedical engineering department at  General Hospital; manager of the Medical Services Division of an Electronics Company; and project engineer for Automated Health Systems. His associations in research have included Presbyterian Medical Center , U.S. Public Health Service,  University Medical Center, Palo Alto Medical Research Foundation, and N.A.S.A. He was one of the biomedical engineers on the shipboard recovery crew for the Apollo 14 moon flight in 1971.

He  is experienced in planning, clinical application, maintenance, and management of medical equipment and systems. He developed and managed biomedical and technical equipment support programs for hospitals for 16 years before starting his own company. His consulting clients have included over 100 hospitals, businesses, insurance firms, and attorneys. As a medical equipment planning consultant, he has planned medical equipment and systems for approximately 50 healthcare facility projects. He has performed investigations of injuries related to the use of medical equipment for 20 years. He has been an expert witness in litigation involving a wide variety of medical devices for both defense and plaintiff.

EW #882   participates regularly in professional activities as a member of the major associations in his field (Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, National Fire Protection Association - Health Care Section, American Society for Health Care Risk Management and American Society for Hospital Engineering). He has presented numerous papers at professional meetings and has authored journal articles in Biomedical Instrumentation & Technology, Journal of Clinical Engineering, Journal of Healthcare Risk Management and Journal of Nuclear Medicine. He is both a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician and Certified Clinical Engineer. He has served on the certification baords of both programs.

He has taught classes in, and served on advisory committees for, biomedical technology and engineering programs at community colleges and at the University of California.

During the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he was a Venue Technology Manager in charge of coordination installation and support of all technical, communication and computer systems at one of the Olympic competition sites.
