Born in Surrey, after education at Reigate Grammar School and recognised London schools of architecture and town planning, He obtained some years' post-qualification experience in private architectural offices in London before employment in County and Borough planning offices, eventually gaining a senior local authority position. The sequel to this came about with the establishment of his independent practice as a Chartered Architect and Chartered Town Planner in Kent and later, Sussex, which has been maintained for over 20 years.

In consequence, with practical experince in architecture and building construction, urban design, development control, and the associated spheres of historic buildings legislation, planning supervision (health and safety) and arboriculture, he is able to make known with fair conviction what amounts to good practice in the various facets that comprise everyday consultancy activity. Further, other relevant engagements have been undertaken in recent years such as ecclesiastical work of a routine nature, and residential inspections and reports prior to house-purchase, etc.

As a quite separate result of community service work over a period of time, He was awarded the MBE in the 1993 New Year's Honours List. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in 1995. Hobbies include orienteering and occasional travel abroad; also Planning Aid - a charitable function of Royal Town Planning Institute branches.
