1995-2001 - Chief Metallurgist - Primary responsibilities are the direction and formation of engineering teams to complete research and test projects in an accurate, timely, and cost effective manner, and to serve as Association’s primary metallurgical engineer in the areas of wheels, castings, and tank car plates.

1988 1995 Executive Director - Responsible to Assistant Vice President for overall direction and leadership of the 100 employee Chicago Technical Center research effort. Primary responsibilities include implementation of research strategies and initiatives of the Association officers, as well as regular operational involvement with each of the Center's division directors and managers. Principal research and consulting activities are in the area of wheel and axle technology.

1972 1988 Director, Metallurgy - Responsible for directing metallurgical research, analysis, and testing associated with railroad rails, wheels, and freight car components. Administrative duties include budget preparation and control of Metallurgy Division, supervision of six engineers and two technicians. Research projects have been completed which have produced the knowledge necessary for manufacturing rails with 30 percent greater strength and toughness, wheels of improved resistance to failure, and fracture safe cast steel freight car components. Duties have also involved drafting new specifications for rail steels and couplers and freight car truck cast steels. Other responsibilities include serving as a consultant on various problems to AAR member railroads as necessary and the technical organization of conferences and symposia.

1965 1971 U.S. Steel Corporation, Applied Research Laboratory
As a Research Engineer, directed metallurgical development work on railroad products, cast rolling mill rolls, and forged products. Evaluated rails produced by advanced steel making and metal forming processes, determine the cause of failure of heat treatment variables on the residual stresses in railroad wheels. Developed methods of improving the quality and service performance of cast iron and cast steel work rolls. Developed Ni Cr Mo V steels with superior deep seated impact properties for nuclear pressure vessels and developed unique methods for joining large alloy steel forgings.

1962 1965 Atomics International Division of North American Aviation
As a Principal Investigator on several development programs, determined the effects of chemical composition, test environment, and irradiation on the creep and stress rupture behavior of fuel element cladding materials such as austenitic stainless steels, Zircaloy, AM 350, Hastelloy N, and various refractory alloys, Directed a program to develop an electron beam melted stainless steel with less than one part per million boron. Duties also included program budget preparation, spending control, and research proposal preparation.
